The Inspection
For this project in Manassas, VA, our inspection of the existing 280-square-foot deck revealed that the original wood joists were compromised and could not support a new high-end composite surface. We determined that a successful restoration required more than just new boards; it needed a complete replacement of the 2x10 internal joists. Our team also assessed the 48 linear feet of railing and the stair system to ensure that the transition to Trex Select would be seamless, safe, and structurally sound for decades to come.
The Process
The transformation began with the demolition of the old decking and deteriorated joists. We installed new premium pressure-treated 2x10 joists using galvanized face-mount hangers at 16-inch intervals. For the surface, we installed Trex Select boards in the rich, earthy 'Saddle' color. To achieve a sleek, modern look, we used hidden clips and deck screws, eliminating visible hardware on the main floor. The stairs were rebuilt with 7 solid Trex Select boards, and the railings were enhanced with white post sleeves and a matching Saddle Cap Rail, creating a beautiful contrast and a comfortable, splinter-free handrest.
The Result
The final result is a complete revitalization of the home’s outdoor living space. This Manassas residence now features a durable, 280 sq ft Trex Select Saddle deck that combines the beauty of wood grain with the resilience of composite technology. The contrast between the warm Saddle boards and the crisp white post sleeves provides a classic, high-end aesthetic.
