The Inspection
For this project in Washington, DC, we performed an in-depth inspection of two distinct areas: a front porch and a rear deck, each approximately 80 square feet. Our assessment determined that the front porch required a full structural rebuild, including new footings and a complete pressure-treated sub-structure. For the rear deck, we focused on a surface and railing upgrade. A key part of our planning involved ensuring the ledger board connection was secured with 1/2'' expansion bolts to meet modern safety standards before installing the new Trex composite systems.
The Process
The construction began with the total demolition of the existing front porch. We installed a new robust foundation using premium pressure-treated joists, beams, and posts. For the surface of both the porch and the deck, we selected Trex Enhance in the elegant 'Clam Shell' grey finish, installed with black hidden fasteners for a clean, screw-free look. We then installed the Trex Black railing system, featuring round aluminum balusters for a contemporary aesthetic. To complete the look, grey fascia boards were applied to the perimeters, hiding the wood framing and providing a polished, maintenance-free exterior.
The Result
The final result is a cohesive and modernized exterior for this Washington, DC residence. By replacing both the front porch and the back deck with Trex Enhance Clam Shell, the home now boasts high-performance outdoor spaces that won’t rot, fade, or stain. The contrast between the grey boards and the black aluminum railings adds significant curb appeal and structural value.
