The Inspection
For this Chantilly, VA project, we removed the existing 348 sq ft second-story deck and staircase. We then excavated new footings to a 24-inch depth with 18-inch flared bases, pouring concrete to meet code and ensure a strong foundation for the new deck and pergola.
The Process
The robust structural framing was built using premium #2 pressure-treated pine, featuring 6x6 posts, 2x10 beams, and 2x8 joists spaced at 12 inches on center. To protect the space below, we installed the innovative Trex Rainscape system among the joists before laying down the Trex Select decking boards in a beautiful 'Saddle Brown' finish. We utilized black clip hidden fasteners to ensure a flawless surface without visible screws. The perimeter is secured with a Prowood railing system combining a matching Trex Select top rail with modern black aluminum pickets. A major highlight of the build was constructing a custom 16' x 14' wood pergola over the center of the deck, complemented by 4-foot wide stairs featuring 14 steps equipped with low-voltage riser lights.
The Result
The completion of this 348-square-foot Trex deck has completely transformed the homeowner’s outdoor living experience. The warm tones of the Saddle Brown decking , combined with the elegant custom pergola and integrated stair lighting, provide a weather-resistant and highly functional entertainment space. Thanks to the Rainscape system, the area underneath is protected and dry.
