The Process
Once we carefully removed the existing wood decking boards and the cap rail , we performed a thorough structural inspection of the underlying frame. During this evaluation, we discovered that a few of the existing 2” x 10” joists had deteriorated. Prioritizing safety and structural integrity, we executed a change order to remove and dispose of three damaged joists, replacing them with three new #2 Pressure-Treated (PT) pine joists secured with new joist hangers. To maximize the lifespan of the deck and protect the substructure from future moisture damage, we also applied 1-5/8” butyl joist tape to a total of eighteen joists.
The Result
With a newly reinforced foundation, we proceeded to install the new decking using the TimberTech Prime Collection in a beautiful Dark Teak color. We utilized hidden clips and deck screws for a seamless, pristine finish on the main floor, and installed matching solid square boards for the new cap rail. The final result is a structurally sound, aesthetically pleasing deck that the client can enjoy for years with minimal maintenance.
