The Process
The construction phase began by securing the new awning roof ledger directly to the existing house siding. We erected the 6x6 support posts and installed the 2” x 12” rafters to create the expansive 14' x 20' frame. To ensure a perfect architectural match, we installed Certainteed Landmark Pro shingles that mirrored the home’s existing roof. The technical work included precise flashing and roof valley installation to prevent water filtration, followed by the addition of 5-inch K-style gutters. A unique feature of this project was the triangular screening on the sides of the awning roof and the use of black deck screen mesh, which provides protection without sacrificing the airy, rustic feel of the exposed interior trusses.
The Result
The final result is a breathtaking screened sanctuary in Silver Spring that offers nearly 300 square feet of protected living space. The open-ceiling design creates a sense of grandeur, while the high-quality shingles and matching gutters ensure a seamless aesthetic integration. This new roofed area allows the homeowners to enjoy the outdoors year-round, shielded from rain and insects alike.
