Revitalizing an Unattractive Porch
The Inspection
The project commenced with the removal of the pre-existing wooden deck entrance and stairs, ensuring all debris was disposed of in a 20-yard dumpster. An inspection of the site confirmed the need for new footings as per the construction plans, which were to be dug below grade and installed to a depth of 24 inches, adhering to local building codes, with an 18-inch diameter flared at the bottom.
The Process
The construction process involved pouring ready-mix concrete for the footings, followed by the crafting of a new deck structure spanning 84 square feet. The deck was constructed using high-quality Pressure Treated Southern Pine #2 for the decking boards and Prowood Railing for the balusters and railing, ensuring durability and safety. The deck's stability was further enhanced by the installation of rim and end joists, and it was securely attached to the house with a deck ledger. The stairs were reconstructed with a 4-foot width, featuring new 2-inch by 12-inch stringers and Pressure Treated Wood 2-inch by 6-inch step boards, complemented by Prowood railing and sturdy 4-inch by 4-inch posts.
The Result
The completed project boasts a robust and aesthetically pleasing 14-foot by 6-foot pressure-treated wood deck, complete with a secure railing system and a set of 7 or 8 steps that provide safe and easy access. The addition of a neatly framed and installed lattice around the deck and beneath the stairs, measuring 4 feet by 8 feet, enhances the visual appeal while offering functional benefits. The meticulous execution of the project resulted in a high-quality outdoor space that is both functional and visually appealing, designed to last for years to come.
