Beautifying an old porch

The Inspection

For this 1st-story porch project in Washington, D.C., our first priority was assessing the underlying structure. After planning the removal of the existing 2”x4” decking boards, our scope of work included a thorough inspection of all wood joists. Ensuring the substructure was sound and free of rot was critical before upgrading the surface to wider, premium pressure-treated 2”x6” boards.

The Process

The replacement process began with clearing the 100-square-foot area. We then installed new 2”x6” premium pressure-treated pine decking boards, utilizing heavy-duty 3” exterior self-starting star flat-head wood deck screws for a secure, long-lasting hold. Finally, we carefully reattached the existing metal railing to the newly reinforced decking structure, completing the entire installation and site cleanup within an estimated 2 business days.

The Result

The final result is a structurally sound and visually appealing 100-square-foot porch that restores the exterior charm of this Washington, DC home. The transition from older 2x4s to substantial 2×6 premium pine boards provides a much sturdier feel underfoot.
