The Inspection
For this 1,380 sq ft project in Vienna, VA, our inspection showed that both the surface and structure needed full replacement. We identified deteriorated joists and rim areas, especially around the railing posts, requiring additional repairs. This allowed us to plan a fully aligned, high-strength substructure for a safe and durable rebuild.
The Process
The project began with the complete demolition of the old deck, including joists and hangers. We installed new premium pressure-treated 2”x10” joists with a 16-inch on-center spacing, secured with galvanized face-mount hangers. To maximize the lifespan of the frame, we applied Prowood joist tape to every joist for superior waterproof protection. For the surface, we used Madison Wood 'Select Grade-C' lumber-treated boards (2'' x 6''), known for their higher quality and fewer knots. The process also included rebuilding the stair system from the stringers up and replacing the critical rim joists around the deck. Every board was fastened using #9 x 3-inch star flat-head wood screws to ensure a flush, high-end finish across the entire 1,380 sq ft area.
The Result
The final result is one of the most significant deck transformations in Vienna. This 1,380-square-foot outdoor retreat now features a rock-solid structural foundation and the premium aesthetic of Select Grade-C Madison Wood. The combination of new stringers, reinforced rim joists, and waterproofed framing ensures that this massive deck will remain a safe and beautiful space for decades.
